Highways England has announced contracts worth more than £8 billion that will see work undertaken to improve the motorways and A roads throughout the country.
Set up by using the Routes to Market Regional Delivery Partnership – incentivising companies to improve safety and journeys on the roads – the deals are worth up to £8.7 billion.
Under the contracts and the way the deals have been set up, there are incentives for results such as shorter duration and more accurate management of roadworks to help drivers plan their journeys better.
Other incentives will be offered for results such as encouraging innovation – lighting and signs – designed to require less maintenance, reduce disruption and improve worker safety; reduce road noise and increase environmental benefits; buying more efficiently and buying locally.
Work has been designated into eight Lots, undertaken by 13 companies, known as Delivery Integration Partners.
These will be part of the Regional Delivery Partnership, developing, designing and constructing projects across our highways – motorways and A roads – from next year, all the way up to 2024.
In a change to the previous way work was procured, the new approach ensures a secure pipeline of work, giving confidence to businesses so that they can invest in skills and employment.
The different Lots include projects in different regions; the most lucrative Lot is the seventh, worth £2.8 billion for projects in the East. These will be carried out by Galliford Try, Costain and Skanska.
Work is arranged into 18 packages of schemes; Lots 1 to 3 are worth up to £100 million, and 4 to 8 are worth in excess of that total.
