Network Rail Scotland getting ready for CP6 infrastructure investment

Network Rail Scotland is set to embark on a multi-billion pound spending programme on its infrastructure, which is why a large recruitment drive is set to begin.

In the five years from 2019, in excess of £4 billion will be invested to upgrade facilities, and improve both the running and maintenance of rail infrastructure.

This is part of the wider Strategic Business Plan for Control Period 6 (CP6) between 2019 – 2024 which aims to also improve efficiency; Network Rail will invest more than ever before on the railways in those five years and Network Rail Scotland is following suit with heavy investment.

In order to prepare for this work, Network Rail Scotland is creating approximately 200 jobs, ranging from logistics, team leader and planning roles, to construction, rail operative and project management positions.

If the infrastructure improvements are to be made, a highly skilled workforce is required and Network Rail Scotland is aware of this fact in its drive to deliver a network in the country fit for the 21st century.

A spokesperson for the company commented: “We’re currently building the best railway Scotland has ever had and to do that we need to recruit and retain the best people.

“The railway is an exciting and fast-growing industry and Network Rail can offer a rewarding career.

“Rail travel is more popular now than ever before, with more than 96 million passengers travelling in Scotland each year, and our industry makes an important contribution to keeping the country and its economy moving.”

Even though the five-year investment period begins next year, rail improvements are already underway in the country.

Network Rail Scotland say the current period of enhancement is the biggest since the Victorian era and projects are taking place to expand the railway, give passengers improved facilities, and introduce electric trains that not only allow for more frequent and faster journeys, but also improved air quality.
